Is MBI right for me?

Business skills are needed everywhere. The McIntire Business Institute: Business Fundamentals Certificate (MBI) is designed for non-business majors interested in gaining a competitive advantage by developing skills valued by employers. Learn fundamentals in accounting, finance, marketing, management, organizational behavior, and strategy, as well as differentiators like business communication, negotiation, and Excel.

Am I eligible?

MBI is specifically designed for non-business majors. We accept applications from second-years (sophomores) through graduating fourth-years (seniors) with liberal arts, science, or engineering majors. Recent graduates or those pursuing advanced degrees in a non-business field can also apply.

Can international students apply?

Yes, international are welcome to apply to MBI.

What type of degree will I receive?

MBI is a non-degree program. Students who successfully finish the program receive a certificate from the University of Virginia’s McIntire School of Commerce attesting to their successful completion.

What is included in the curriculum?

The curriculum is specifically designed for non-business majors. Interactive classes incorporate real-world case studies. Focus areas include accounting, finance, marketing, management, organizational behavior, and strategy. Business communication, negotiation, and Excel are also built into the curriculum.

Who teaches in MBI?

Participants are taught by the same faculty who teach in McIntire’s top-ranked business programs.

When is the application deadline?

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. We encourage you to apply early to secure a spot, as seating is limited. Applications must be submitted online. Start your application now.

Is the coursework graded?

Grading is on a pass/fail basis. Students whose participation is exceptional—demonstrated in the classroom and in the course deliverables—are eligible for a distinction of outstanding achievement attached to their certificate.

Will I receive course credit?

MBI is a non-degree program. Academic credit is not awarded.

What kind of career development is provided?

Participants have access to career advising with the McIntire School’s Commerce Career Services. Career advisers work with participants one-on-one and provide a variety of career support, including resume and cover letter review and guidance in interviewing and networking best practices.

How long is MBI and when does it start?

MBI is offered in two formats at the University of Virginia’s McIntire School of Commerce in Rouss & Robertson Halls.

Academic-year: Offered during the University of Virginia’s academic year, from late August through late April; classes meet Fridays from 11 a.m. to 1:45 p.m.

Summer residential: Offered over five weeks, from late May through late June; classes meet daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

How much does it cost?

The MBI: Business Fundamentals Certificate costs $6,000, regardless of start date (academic-year or summer residential).

Is housing provided for the summer residential format?

Housing is not included in summer residential fee, though participants have the option of arranging on-campus housing through University of Virginia Conference Services On-Grounds Housing options.

Do you offer financial aid?

Yes, scholarships are available.
